Homecoming Parade Rules
- All entries must follow local and state laws and regulations in regards to the safe operation of a motor vehicle.
- There cannot be more occupants in your vehicle than there are seatbelts.
- There cannot be any participants in the bed of a truck at any time during the parade.
- The driver of the vehicle must stay inside the vehicle at all times during the course of the parade.
- No semi-trucks will be permitted in the parade.
- Small Floats must not exceed thirty (30) feet in total length excluding the vehicle towing the float.
- Large Floats must be between thirty (30) and forty (40) feet in length excluding the towing vehicle.
- All units must not exceed thirteen (13) feet in total height.
- Floats may not have more than ten (10) people on it, and these ten (10) must be instrumental to the theme of the float.
- All participants on floats must dismount the stopped vehicle at the end of the parade route in front of the Student Center.
- All vehicles/units must maintain a safe distance of approximately fifteen (15) to twenty (20) feet away from the parade unit in front of them.
- Item Distribution
- All candy and promotional items must be physically handed to patrons in a safe manner, and must not cause a litter problem, or a hazard to parade attendees. To do this the unit may have up to twenty (20) participants walking on either side of the vehicle.
- Participants may not distribute any products containing (or referencing) the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, firearms, weapons, or adult stores/strip clubs during the parade.
- The unit may not stop in front of the parade judging stand.
- The unit must operate safely and may be disqualified at any time for any reason by the Homecoming Committee, SIU Office of Student Engagement (OSE) Staff, or Emergency Personnel.
- If disqualified the unit’s participants must follow all instructions of SIU OSE staff and Emergency Personnel on scene.
- If a student organization is disqualified, they may face restrictions for future Homecoming Parades, and may face further sanctions as determined by Students Rights and Responsibilities.
- All floats must reflect the SIU Homecoming theme.
- All parade units must clearly display the name of the business/organization.
- All parade participants must conduct themselves in a respectable and family-friendly manner.
- Small and large floats are required to have fire-extinguishers; all other parade units are highly recommended to have fire-extinguisher.
- All parade participants must sign the “Assumption of Risk, Release and Hold Harmless Agreement” to participate in the SIU Homecoming Parade (available online and on-site).
